Essential oils trigger the olfactory pathways influencing body, mind and spirit.

Aromatherapy in Ayurveda is known as gandha chikitsa meaning therapy based on the sense of smell. Essential oils are pure potent medicine derived from nature. Plants produce chemical constituents that help protect them from their surrounding environment. Since humans are carbon based just like plants, extracted essential oils can also benefit us. Different plants have distinctive qualities and healing properties. Tea tree for example grows in swampy areas of Australia where the environment is hot and humid, a breeding ground for mold, fungus and bacteria. The tree in order to protect itself will therefore develop a strong internal resistance against these threats. The aromatic compounds found in tea tree are naturally antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-fungal and analgesic. The natural constituent compounds found in Lavender are Linalool, a-terpineol, Linalyl acetate and b-ocimene all having anti inflammatory benefits. Aromatherapy is a noble art of using essential oils for therapeutic purposes. Gaining an understanding of the different essential oils and when and how to use them is a very empowering tool that can have a strong impact on maintaining a healthy state in body, mind and emotion.

One of the unique qualities of essential oils is their molecular size. Unlike synthetic medicine due to their smaller structure they have the ability to cross cell walls and some like frankincense for instance can cross our most guarded barrier in the human body the blood brain barrier. This in turn can help with diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

Essential oils have an affinity to various structures of the body. Applied to different marma points on the body they can engage the sensory perceptions of smell and touch. Our skin being the largest organ of our body absorbs the essential oils and our body intelligently directs them where they need to go. According to Dr Vasant Lad “Essential oils alter the body’s neurochemistry and trigger the release of neurotransmitters and neuropeptides through the olfactory bulb and chemoreceptor’s under the skin. (These are the same neuropeptides released in the central nervous system that govern pscych-neuro immunological response.) Essential oils work in our systems similar to the food we eat in ayurvedic terms through three fields of action rasa (taste), Virya (heating or cooling energy) and Vipaka (post digestive effect). Bhrajaka agni promotes digestion through the medium of the skin. Substances applied to the skin can influence sweating and cellular metabolism via their post digestive effect.”1 When we have a clear understanding of a substance and it’s qualities we can use it to benefit our health.

This is where Pure Essentials- Ayurvedic Alchemy’s passion comes into play, creating products that can cater to peoples unique various needs. Knowing your Prakruti and Vikruti can help guide you in making the right choice of product for you.

Aside of using essential oils in food, drinks, inhaling through a diffuser, applying to the body as in abayanga (warm massage oil) can be one of the most beneficial ways of regulating your entire system.

Integrating self massage into a daily routine can be one of the most profound acts of self care you can reward yourself with. It will also keep your immune system boosted. Traditionally abhayanga is a generous amount of warm oil, medicated with herbs or essential oils and gently massaged into the entire body before steaming or bathing. Our products at Pure Essentials are designed mainly to be left on the body and worn throughout the day. They act as a moisturizer and a perfume while delivering all the health benefits of a synergistic blend of essential oils.

Administrating daily self massage can have a profound effect on our health and well being. It nourishes our yin energy and can support hormonal balance. Ayurveda understands that application of oil on the body can bring a feeling of stability, warmth and comfort.

The skin absorbs what is applied to it and has to digest it. Therefore it is best to only apply to your skin what you would put into your mouth. This is why Pure essentials products will use the purest doTERRA essential oils and do the best at sourcing organic pure ingredients. Our skin is an excretory organ and is constantly at work to reduce toxic waste that we encounter from our outside environment and from what we ingest.

The aromatherapist Valerie Ann Worwood explains the many benefits of essential oils on our skin –

“Essential oils work cosmetically and as anti aging agents in several ways. They stimulate skin cells into reproducing at a quicker rate, thus reducing the time- lag between new skin growth and the elimination of old cells (and reversing the process of aging in which this time span is extended) Skin that has been treated with essential oils thus becomes more dynamic and stronger. Essential oils can prevent the congestion of toxins and expedite the elimination of toxic debris by improving the lymphatic flow and general condition of the lymph glands. They improve circulation which aids oxygenation and energize the dermis by the rate nutrients are fed to it. Some can balance the rate at which sebum is produced by the sebaceous glands, thereby stabilizing a healthy skin condition. As bactericides they neutralize unwanted and unfriendly bacteria, preventing blemishing conditions; and as anti inflammatory, they calm sensitive and damaged skin. Since some essential oils contain phyto-hormones they create an equilibrium within our endocrine system which surpasses in effectiveness that produced by any other substance. Their action on the peripheral nerve-endings helps to relieve the stress and tension that so often lead directly to an aging skin- you look as worn out as you feel. Collagen and elastin are kept in good condition, and there is some basis to believe also that nutrients and proteins contained in essential oils actually work as restorative building blocks to these all important tissue fibres.”2

Every person is unique so different essential oils and base ingredients will differ for different people and circumstances. Our Pure essentials products are designed around the seasons and combined for different body types.
